Living Abroad

Avoiding home-sickness

Just like the first time you stayed at your grandparents’ house or went off to scout camp, being away from a familiar environment – even if it’s for a fairly short time – can bring on separation anxiety. While you may be excited about living, studying or working overseas, be aware that it’s not only children who experience homesickness. Anyone relocating for work, going into the military, or starting a whole new life abroad can expect a few symptoms of homesickness: feelings of sadness, loneliness, and fear, coupled with stress-induced headaches and stomach-upsets. These are nothing to be ashamed of.

If you have experienced homesickness before, don’t let it put you off travelling to Morocco with Explora Morocco, for example, but learn from it. Maybe the language barrier was greater than you expected. Maybe you missed your family or were worrying about things at home. What will you do differently this time?

Even if you are excited about some aspects of your time abroad and know you will have a wonderful time, having organised Kitesurfing with Explora Morocco, it is a good idea to accept that homesickness might occur. The best way to avoid homesickness is to plan for it. Coping strategies can be thought up well in advance of your journey overseas, rather than on-the-spot in an unknown place. Think about what you might find a challenge, and work out how to solve issues that might arise. Some people may find it hard to be away from their friends, families or partners; others feel lost without their weekly routine of pub quiz, poker night and football practice.

The real challenge in living abroad for the first time is the small details that nobody thinks about, such as when shops close at the weekend, or how to buy tickets for trams. If you can make contact with anyone who’s done the trip already and is happy to give you some tips, take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions about the little things that everyone takes for granted.
